Both maternal grandparents were commercial artists. My mother was a teacher and a talented artist. She taught us how to use a colour wheel and to draw and paint when we were children, including taking me to live nude modelling classes to learn how to sketch quickly and properly. She had a fully equipped art studio in which we were encouraged to experiment with a variety of media. When I was 18 I discovered her silk painting gear and fell in love with it. I attended several silk painting workshops soon after, which introduced me to the steam method of fixing rather than immersion methods which are not nearly as good.
I acquired my own frame and steamer by the age of 20 and have been painting silk and mixing my own dyes from Drimalan F powders since then. I have a direct link with a silk factory in China to supply 100% pure natural silk. With 30 years of experience in silk painting and dying, it is all about the colour for me. Colour that makes your eyes water. Achieving the exact colour of Lake Eacham, or the pink of a lemon scented gum.
I have run silk painting workshops for children and adults for the last 9 years. Private workshops can be provided by arrangement. All materials provided and you take home two silk scarves. Great to make a memory for a special occasion.
